There are too many irresponsible dog owners. Make sure that you’re not one of them by thinking hard and carefully about the decision to get a dog.
Firstly, have your dog microchipped and have the information updated. If a dog gets lost, someone will take the animal to the vet. It is phenomenal that so many don’t take the time to do this simple act of kindness for your dog.
It would be best if you thought about the decision to get a dog repeatedly. Don’t be one of those awful people that dumps their dog beside the road because your child has become bored with the Christmas present. This is too dreadful even to contemplate.
A dog is a commitment. Be sure that you are up to the challenge. Your dog can provide you with all the love you’ll ever need but contemplate what such a decision will need. It will change your life, and you must do the run-through checklist over and over.
Control the pet population
Be a responsible dog owner. Control the animal population by having your dog neutered or spayed. There are too many strays and too many gorgeous dogs that don’t have owners. Don’t you go adding to this problem?
When it comes to choosing your dog, be assured that you have perfect conditions for having such a companion. Is there enough space for a big dog? Is your garden sufficient for having such a pet? Have food, water, and shelter if your dog will be left outside for any extended periods.
Make a back room ready for your new addition to the family. Have an area for the dog to poop, although it is likely to poop most anywhere. Ensure there are enough water and some food and ventilation. You’re going to be picking up a lot of poop. Get ready for that. It’s all part of growing up.
Your pet could be enclosed in an area outback. Make sure there’s shade, shelter and food, and water. If you have puppies and you’re at work, try and get a neighbor or friend to pop by and see if everything’s okay.
Have your pet thoroughly checked by the vet and ensure it has the necessary inoculations. This could be the same time that you have your dog chipped, so everything is done in one fell swoop.
Secure enclosure
Once home, check that the enclosure outback is secure. The last thing you need is to go scouring the neighborhood after a tough day, looking for your pet!
Bring your pet indoors at night. Here you can begin to make your dog house-trained, and there are several ways of doing this. Check with your vet on which methods are recommended.
Once your dog is thoroughly house-trained, it can be left to roam the house at any time and will probably spend a lot of time sleeping on your bed.
You may decide to get a rescue dog, and many are opting to do so these days. Take the dog to your vet as the first port of call and have the dog thoroughly checked.
You can leave your rescue at home without the need to be house-trained, although there still may be an odd accident.
Even if you get home rather late, take your dog for a walk. At weekends, go to the park and check whether your pet needs to be on a leash.
Here’s a good point to consider – it’s always best to get two dogs if you have space, especially if you’re out during the day. They keep themselves company, and you don’t need to worry about them feeling lost and abandoned!
